This week in our Bible study, we covered chapter seven in Romans. This chapter can be split into two sections: in the first section, Paul brings up the analogy of a wife and two husbands. In the second section, he mentions three out of the four laws that are operating both inside and outside of us right now. Bible study was so enjoyable this week because we not only discussed and understood Paul’s burden to us in this chapter, but also shared our own personal experiences related to being one with Christ and allowing Christ to fulfill the law! The picture that Paul starts with is actually just a picture of us taking Christ as our husband, or in other words, us relying on Christ, taking Christ as our everything, and being one with Christ. We all were born “married” to our “old man”, the fallen, sinful man, but in Romans 6:6 we see that the old man, our first husband, has already been crucified on the cross and is dead. This means we are free to take another husband - Christ!
Paul continues on to cover the law of God, the law of good, and the law of sin in the second section. The law of sin is always more powerful than the law of good, which means that in ourselves, we are never able to fulfill the outward law, the law of God. Praise the Lord, Christ can fulfill the law! Paul leaves us with a major cliffhanger here - he hasn’t yet talked about the law of the spirit, which is the law that can overcome the law of sin in our flesh, but he has hinted that we have hope because of Christ! Stay tuned for our next Bible study to learn the extent of all the blessings that God has given us through Christ!
Rom. 7:4 “So then, my brothers, you also have been made dead to the law through the body of Christ so that you might be joined to another, to Him who has been raised from the dead, that we might bear fruit to God.”
